What are the risks of Botox?

Botox injections are considered safe if administered by a licensed and skilled healthcare provider. Incorrect administration of the procedure can result in unwanted outcomes or even harm. Potential side effects and unwanted outcomes may include:

  • Symptoms similar to those of flu or headache.
  • Crooked eyebrows or droopy eyelids.
  • Drooling or crooked smile.
  • Dry or watery eyes.
  • Infection at the injection site.
  • In rare cases, the medication may spread to unintended areas of the body, causing symptoms. If you experience any of the following symptoms hours or weeks after the procedure, contact your healthcare provider immediately:
    • Muscle weakness.
    • Breathing problems.
    • Vision problems.
    • Difficulty talking or swallowing.
    • Allergic reaction.
    • Loss of bladder control.

It is generally not recommended to receive Botox injections if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Botox Most Common Questions

Repeated muscle movements from facial expressions create dynamic wrinkles. Smiling, squinting, and frowning etches lines into the skin that become more pronounced over time. These types of wrinkles are different than static wrinkles, which develop as our skin produces less collagen and elastin and the effects of sun exposure and other environmental factors take their toll. Different treatments address different types of wrinkles.

Your procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to an hour, depending on the area or areas being treated. Depending on the product used, you should see initial results within 3 to 7 days with BOTOX. The results typically last between 3 to 5 months, so we recommend periodic treatments to seamlessly maintain the results.

The active ingredient in Botox and the other neuromodulators targets specific muscles by blocking the nerve signals to them. This results in the muscle relaxing, reducing the appearance of wrinkles.

These injections are typically not considered painful because they are quick and performed with a fine needle. We prep the treatment area with a numbing cream to minimize the potential for any discomfort.

While there is no downtime needed after a BOTOX treatment, we recommend taking the following precautions:

  • Do not lie down for at least 4 hours after treatment.
  • Avoid rubbing or massaging treated areas for the first few hours.
  • Postpone strenuous exercise for 24 hours.
  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption for 24 hours before and after treatment.

Botox, which was originally approved by the FDA to treat droopy eyelids (“lazy eye”), is now approved to treat multiple conditions. These uses can help greatly improve the quality of a patient’s life. The conditions Botox is used to treat include:

  • Excessive underarm sweating — A condition called hyperhidrosis causes some people to have overactive sweat glands in their underarms. It can be an embarrassing and costly issue for women and men who have to constantly replace stained shirts or blouses.
  • Migraine headaches — People who suffer from chronic migraines often have a difficult time finding effective relief using medication. Botox injections have helped many migraine sufferers because the treatment temporarily relaxes muscles that have been linked to the condition. If you have migraines more than 15 times a month, Botox injections can reduce the frequency of the headaches.
  • Masseter reduction — The masseter muscle is one of a trio of muscles used when we chew food. It is in the cheek area and when it is overdeveloped the masseter muscle can cause your face to appear square rather than slim and triangular. Botox is used for jawline slimming because it temporarily relaxes the masseter, so it doesn’t appear so pronounced.
  • Gummy smile — If your upper lip lifts high enough to expose the gums above your top teeth when you smile, Botox injections can prevent the lip from lifting so high.

The most common dynamic wrinkles targeted by Botox injections include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Vertical frown lines between the brows (also called “the 11s”)
  • Crow’s feet
  • Nasal squint lines (“bunny lines”)

Our Calgary Botox providers use precisely targeted injections that don’t create an unnatural appearance.

  • Botox and other neuromodulators smooth away lines like crow’s feet and frown lines that are caused by the contractions of facial muscles. Results develop gradually within a few days of treatment.
  • Dermal fillers smooth away lines and folds caused by aging and sun damage such as lines around the lips and smile lines (nasolabial folds). They also add and restore volume to areas of the face such as the cheeks, temples, under the eyes, and the lips. Results are immediate.

Our skilled injectors at Xthetics Face and Body Sculpt have the expertise needed to safely and effectively administer injectable treatments that help you achieve the look you want—whether subtle or dramatic. We first thoroughly cleanse your skin and then apply numbing cream for increased comfort, if desired. They then make several tiny injections into the targeted muscle or muscles. Our injectors use very precise, controlled techniques to ensure that your results look natural.

Botulinum toxin type A is considered a safe, minimally invasive way to smooth dynamic wrinkles. Botox was approved by the FDA and has a remarkable track record for safety when an experienced, trained provider makes the injections. The primary side effects of these treatments include redness, bruising, or soreness at the injection site.

Most women and men get their first Botox treatment when they are bothered by lines and creases caused by facial muscle contractions. Depending on genetics, sun exposure, and personal preference, patients may be in their 40s, 50s, and up. Many people in their mid-20s and 30s have these treatments as a proactive measure to keep lines and wrinkles from forming in the first place.

Eligible residents of Alberta can benefit from complete coverage for physician services that are medically necessary, as well as some dental and oral surgical health services, through the Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan (AHCIP). However, any surgical procedures that are not deemed medically essential, such as cosmetic treatments (including Botox), are not included in the AHCIP coverage. The only application of Botox that is currently covered by AHCIP is Botox for headaches.
